Photojournalism
Reflection
For my first food review, my story partner and I had the delight of tasting the new pudding and boba shop Tong Sui in downtown Palo Alto. For this story, I used one of Verde's cameras for the first time to photograph the boba drinks as well the puddings. Finding the right angle was difficult, but I settled on photographing the drinks from below, giving readers the ability to observe the vivid colors and textures of both the puddings and the drinks. For the final story, we decided to crop the background entirely, making a more efficient use of space and allowing readers to learn more about each item through engaging captions.
Reflection
For my "Teaching the Holocaust" feature, I struggled to come up with a simultaneously engaging and simple design that would enhance the authority of my story. After brainstorming various designs that incorporated more complex art, I eventually settled on a design that would incorporate a Jewish artifact framing a dictionary open to the word "antisemitism". The shadows and light interplaying in the image illustrates the complexity of the issue at hand while leaving readers to make their own judgements on the more finite details after being drawn in to read the story. Working through the photo design for this story was a deeply enjoyable and rewarding experience that allowed me to gain a new understanding of the importance of lighting and framing.
